The Washington Nationals are in the middle of the MLB Championship race after game five of the World Series. It’s fair to say that many baseball fans are behind the capital’s team due to their underdog status and their connection to the Montreal Expos. What’s more, the Astro front office’s controversial comments have helped their cause a little more. In game five, they gave all of us another reason to cheer for them. They trolled the biggest clown in America. I mean, President Donald Trump.
The First Pitch
It’s not uncommon for presidents to throw the first pitch at baseball games. After all, this is America’s pastime and America’s most powerful man should take part in it. It is only fitting. Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Jimmy Carter, and George W. Bush are among the presidents who’ve thrown the first pitch in the fall classic. Barack Obama never got the chance to do so in the World Series, however, he did throw out the first pitch in the 2009 All-Star Game at Nationals Park. Wearing a White Sox hat of course.
The current commander in chief, nonetheless, will most likely never have a shot at such honor. Donald Trump didn’t throw the baseball in the World Series and the reason behind it is nothing but brilliant.
Meet Jose Andres
Washington had to look for someone to send the first baseball to the plate for the final home game of the season, after all. Their alternative to Donald Trump? Celebrity chef and humanitarian, Jose Andres. Andres has been one of Trump’s harshest critics, blaming him for the deaths of Puerto Ricans in last year’s disasters. He has also taken jabs at his work ethics stating that “He (Donald Trump) has made money off undocumented workers” on Spanish Media.
To top it off, Donald Trump attended Game 5. One could assume that the game served almost like a triumphant homecoming. Hours after a successful raid that culminated in ISIS’ leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi taking his own life. And yet, seeing Andrés or even knowing that he’d throw the first pitch might have spoiled the party.
Just thinking about it will put a smile on many people’s faces. That’s guaranteed. Imagine a grown overweight man smirking in typical Trump fashion. All while watching one of the many poster boys for the Anti-Trump movement. It’s almost too perfect and too laughable to be true. He can call the ceremonial first pitch whatever he likes, he could even call it “A witch hunt” if he chooses to. It doesn’t matter, the damage has been done.
Let The Roast Begin
Everyone had a comment to make and most of the world, both inside and outside of baseball, roasted the president. HBO’s Bill Maher kicked the roast off questioning Trump’s physical conditioning alluding to his weight and comparing him to former president William Howard Taft.
So Trump is going to Game 5 today of the World Series? And he'll be the first president since Taft who hasn't thrown out a first pitch…hmm, what could Trump possibly have in common with Taft that would make each man reluctant to attempt this simple athletic feat? What…what..?

ABC’s Stephen Colbert made some comments on Mr. Trump’s particular body proportions a few years ago. “Maybe he’s worried his hands are too small to palm the baseball”. He later showed an old video of the president butchering Take Me Out To The Ballgame at Wrigley Field. Wait, there’s more. Things got better once he arrived at Nationals Park.
“Lock Him Up”
The hometown faithful had a few words of their own for Trump as well. Their welcome with “Lock him up” chants wasn’t very warm, to say the least.
Washington Has Already Won
The Nationals came out on the losing end of a crushing 7-1 defeat in their last game at home. Game Six was a must-win for them and they came up with the W when needed. Everything will be on the line on game seven. No, Washington, you have not won the World Series yet. In fact, you might lose it. Nonetheless, you have won millions of people with one of the greatest trolls in history. As a Latino sportswriter, I must say you channeled the inner Marie Kondo in me and brought joy to my soul. Well done Nats’.
