AL Power Rankings Week 27
The final week of our AL Power Rankings is upon us. Let’s take a look at how the league ended their regular season ahead of the playoffs.
1. Houston Astros (107-55) Last Week: 1
The Astros will close out the regular season AL Power Rankings at the very top. Houston swept Seattle in a pair of games before taking on the Angels and winning three out of four. They’re locked, loaded, and ready for the postseason,
2. Tampa Bay Rays (96-66) Last Week: 5
Tampa finished off Boston before winning two in a row against the Yankees. They clinched their Wild Card spot over the weekend with a win against Toronto. That was their only win against the Blue Jays as they lost the series 2-1. The Rays will take on the A’s in the AL Wild Card game this Wednesday.
3. Minnesota Twins (101-61) Last Week: 6
Minnesota played really well in the last week of the season. The Twins took on the Tigers and Royals to end the regular season. They won five straight games before losing to Kansas City on Sunday. The Twin Cities’ team seems more than ready to take on the Yankees in the ALDS
4. Oakland Athletics (97-65) Last Week: 4
The Athletics split both their series the final time around despite clinching their Wild Card berth during the week. Oakland came out even in a pair of games against the Angels and did the same against the Mariners. They’ll have home-field advantage for the AL Wild Card
5. New York Yankees (103-59) Last Week: 2
The Yankees dropped a few spots in our ranks. New York was on the other side of the Rays’ wins and lost two out of three against the Rangers. They’ll take on the Twins this Friday without Domingo German.
6. Chicago White Sox (72-89) Last Week: 10
The White Sox went out with a bang. Chicago closed out the season in good spirits, winning their series against Cleveland before winning five games in three days against Detroit. They were middle of the pack at best despite their strong finish.
7. Toronto Blue Jays (63-93) Last Week: 7
The Blue Jays had a similar week to the White Sox. They closed out strong winning their series against the Orioles and Tigers. Just like Chicago, they were a middle of the pack team at best for most of the season. The bluebirds are gone and the king dinosaur will take over Toronto once again.
8. Cleveland Indians (93-69) Last Week: 3
The Indians’ final stretch was a disappointment and their spot in the rankings reflects that. Cleveland wasn’t bad enough to suck, but wasn’t good enough to remain competitive either. They lost four in a row this week after falling against the Withe Sox. Go home Indians, watch the postseason and try not to cry at your missed opportunities.
9. Boston Red Sox (84-78) Last Week: 9
The Red Sox came into the final week of the season in idle mode, just trying to come out of it alive. They did so by taking two out of three against Texas before losing against Baltimore over the weekend. Yes, that Baltimore. Enjoy your last month as reigning World Champions Red Sox.
10. Seattle Mariners (68-94) Last Week: 8
What started out as a promising season before falling flat has come to an end. In true Mariner fashion, there was no consistency from last week to this one. Seattle lost three in a row after getting swept by Houston and losing their opener against Oakland. Eventually, they managed to split their series against the A’s. Felix Hernandez will find a better place to pitch and you’ll regret not trading him all these years. See you in 2020, Mariners.
11. Texas Rangers (78-84) Last Week: 14
The Rangers lost their final series on the road as they failed to win their set of games against Boston. They went to Globe Life Park for one last time to face the Yankees and won that series 2-1
12. Baltimore Orioles (51-105) Last Week: 12
The Orioles lost their series against the Blue Jays to start the week. They later took two out of three against Boston and put an end to their misery. Overall, Baltimore had an almost laughable year; they were the worst team in the AL before Detroit claimed that title to themselves. You can come out of your homes, the avian flu has come and gone. Enjoy the offseason, Orioles’ faithful.
13. Kansas City Royals (59-103) Last Week: 13
Kansas City had a bad final week. That being said, it wasn’t as bad as they were during the season. The Royals split a pair of games with the Braves before losing their last weekend series against Minnesota.
14. Los Angeles Angels (72-90) Last Week: 11
The Angels finally put an end to a season that had no mercy on them. They won two of their first three games against the A’s and Astros before losing three straight to end the season.
15. Detroit Tigers (47-114) Last Week: 15
Detroit’s season has come crashing down. They’ll finish the season in a place they fully deserve. Their final week was as bad as many others throughout the year. They lost four in a row as they were swept by the Twins and lost their first doubleheader against the White Sox. They finished things off the only way they know how to: losing their final game. At least try next year Detroit.
