The average shelf live life an NFL running back is roughly 3 years. So it would be wise if you play that position to get all you can as soon as possible. Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson had done just that. Johnson has a new deal that will keep him in the desert for the foreseeable future. The deal may also see him set for life.
What’s The Deal
Johnson signed an extension that will keep him in red and white until at least 2021. The deal could potentially see the Pro Bowler net upwards of $45 million dollars over that time, $30 million of which is guaranteed. This deal makes the All Pro one of the highest paid players at his position in the league. Furthermore, it may also set the bar around the league for the pay rate at the position.
What This Means Around The League
This signing has the potential to impact other players in a major way. One player in particular is LeVeon Bell. Bell is currently holding out in Pittsburgh and is slated to miss their week one match up against the Browns. Bell refused to sign his franchise tag and could use Johnson’s deal to further prove what he’s worth.
More Than Worth It
There can be no questioning whether Johnson is worth the price the Cardinals have paid him. He was a Pro Bowler and All Pro in 2016, posting 15 straight games with at least 100 yards from scrimmage. He finished with over 1200 yards on the ground while also picking up another 800 plus through the air. He’s as versatile a player you’re going to find in the NFL. His only check in the minus column is spending all of last season on the shelf with a wrist injury. However, this season he is 100% and ready to go, which means trouble for opposing defenses.
