AFC South Week 6 Recap

AFC South week 6 recap

After six weeks of NFL action, the AFC South is still a cluttered up mess. No team has taken a grasp on the division with a three-way tie for first place with the Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars all at 3-3 on the season. The Indianapolis Colts are one game out at 2-4.

The Titans currently have the best division record at 2-1 in the division after breaking an 11-game losing streak to the Colts on Monday Night Football. Week 7 the Colts will have an opportunity to bring the Jaguars to a tie in another important division game. Here is how Week 6 panned out.

Tennessee Titans

The first half started ugly for the Titans. Marcus Mariota got the start after missing last week’s game, but was still missing an important part of his game in being mobile. Mariota and the Titans were able to move the ball well, but had a hard time putting the ball in the end zone. Ryan Succop benefited as he broke the record for most consecutive field goals under 50-yards. After halftime the Titans made adjustments on defense, which were the turning point in this game. Being unable to get pressure off the edge the Titans began to blitz up the middle, and the Colts couldn’t stop it. Titans won this one 36-22. The score would have been 29-22, but Derrick Henry decided to break a career long 72 yard touchdown run while trying to close the game out.

Houston Texans

To the surprise  of no one the Houston Texans beat the Cleveland Browns in week 6 33-17. DeShaun Watson didn’t hit the five touchdown mark as he did in previous weeks, but he did account for three through the air. Even without J.J. Watt or Whitney Mercilus the Texans defense was able to help as Johnathan Joseph took a interception 82 yards to the end zone. The big surprise here is DeAndre Hopkins was held to just two receptions.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars could have taken control of the division with a win on Sunday, but came up short to the LA Rams. Even with the lose, the Jaguars continue to run the ball as good as anyone in the league. Leonard Fournette broke off a 75 yard touchdown run. This was a fun game from two teams who took a big step forward in 2017. The Jaguars can take another step forward by securing a long-term quarterback during the off-season.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts looked like the better team at the start of their Monday night game against the Titans. Donte Moncrief dropped what would have been a touchdown in the first quarter, Frank Gore and Marlon Mack gashed the Titans for big runs, and John Simon had a pick-six off a batted ball. Neither team had to punt in the first half, but the Colts had the games only touchdown. However, after halftime the Titans made adjustments and the Colts couldn’t keep up. Jacoby Brissett failed to convert a fourth down while in come-back mode, and the game was effectively over at that point. The Colts will have an opportunity to move up in the division again next week against the Jaguars.
