AFC South First Quarter Playoff Race Update

We are now a quarter of the way through the NFL season. Every team in the NFL starts the season with the same goal, win their division. Winning your division is the only guaranteed way into the playoffs. It is no different for the AFC South, which seems to be a competitive division.

As it stands, three teams are tied for first place; the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans. Each of these teams hold a 2-2 record, and a 1-1 record in the division. Normally the record breaker would be the best record against similar opponents, but none of these teams have played the same opponents aside from one-another at this point. The Indianapolis Colts are currently in the basement with a 1-3 record and no division games played.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans absolutely thrashed the Tennessee Titans, winning 57-14 on Sunday. DeShaun Watson became the first rookie quarterback ever to throw for four touchdowns and rush for another.

DeAndre Hopkins continues to be the most targeted receiver in the NFL with ten catches for 107 yards, and a touchdown. Second-year receiver Will Fuller made his season debut in this one. He had more opportunities, but the chemistry just isn’t there with Watson yet.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Texans forced five turnovers; two interceptions from Marcus Mariota, and two interceptions and a fumble off of Matt Cassel. The Texans have a win over the Titans and a loss to the Jaguars in the division.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars fell to the New York Jets in overtime in week four. Surprisingly, the Jets have also jumped out to a 2-2 start to the 2017 NFL season. The Jaguars won the turnover battle in this one as Blake Bortles only threw one interception, and the Jets had an interception and a fumble lost.

This game came down to the Jaguars being unable to stop the run. Bibal Powell had 163 yards on the ground and Elijah McGuire had 93 yards. The Jaguars have a win over the Texans and a loss to the Titans in the division.

Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans were absolutely embarrassed on Sunday. All 14 points scored came from Marcus Mariota runs. One was a designed run where he took the ball 34 yards to the end zone. The second was a two yard scramble. Most believe Mariota hurt his hamstring on that scramble, but the injury came a few plays earlier when he threw his second interception and was unable to correctly step into the throw. Head Coach Mike Mularkey has Mariota listed as day-to-day.

On the defensive side of the ball the Titans let Houston do whatever they wanted. They were unable to stop the run or pass. In the first half the Texans had five drives, scoring each time. The Titans have a win over the Jaguars and a loss to the Texans in the division.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts took on the Seattle Seahawks in a Sunday Night Football matchup. The game started off relatively close, as the Colts were leading at half time with a score of 15-10. However, the Colts would end up losing this one 46-18. Jacoby Brissett continues to do an admirable job while the Colts wait on Andrew Luck to return. He threw for 157 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and added 33 yards on the ground. The Colts have yet to play a divisional opponent, but with a record of 1-3 they sit in last. If you’re an optimist you could also call it second place for this week.
